Failed MapViewOfFile() for Star Mapping

• DESCRIPTION -- When starting NGCView an error box is displayed which says "Failed to create Star Mapping" or "Failed MapViewOfFile() for Star Mapping".   NGCView continues to operate, but High Magnitude stars are not displayed.
• CAUSE -- One problem that is becoming more common is "Failed MapViewOfFile() for Star Mapping".  It was discovered recently that this is a conflict between Norton Crashguard and NGCView when running under Windows 95 or 98.   The incompatibility is due to Norton Crashguard requesting a fixed Virtual Memory Address in the middle of the 1GB of addressable space allotted to Windows 95 and 98.   As a result, there is no longer a contiguous block of memory large enough to fit the 550MB needed by NGCView's stellar data.  Under Windows NT, there is still sufficient memory to fit the 550MB file.
• FIX -- Before launching NGCView, disable 32 bit CrashGuard.  This will not impact virus scanning or other critical functions.  The following is quoted from their site:

  Situation:
  You are experiencing 32-bit crashes when running a particular application while CrashGuard is running. When CrashGuard is closed, you no longer experience any crashes.
  
  Solution:
  To disable 32-bit crash protection, do the following:
  
  For CrashGuard 3.0 and earlier
  1. Right-click on the CrashGuard shield (bottom right-hand corner of the screen next to the clock.)
  2. Click on "32-Bit Crash Protection." This should remove the checkmark, and disable 32-bit crash protection.
  
  For CrashGuard 4.0
  1. Right-click on the CrashGuard shield (bottom right-hand corner of the screen next to the clock.)
  2. Click on "Settings."
  3. Click on the Advanced tab.
  4. Uncheck "32-bit crashes."
  5. Click OK.
  
  

• NOTES -- Any change to NGCView would result in decreased performance.   We consider the behavior of Norton CrashGuard to be less than neighborly, but understand there are probably justified reasons for implementing their code the way they did.  We have notified Symantec of the incompatibility and hope to provide a solution that is mutually exceptable.

Unable to install RoboEx32.DLL

• DESCRIPTION - When installing NGCView, you receive the alert "unable to install RoboEx32.dll"
• CAUSE -- NGCView uses RoboHelp for its help authoring tool.  The resulting help files use the RoboHelp supplied system dll called RoboEx32.dll for added functionallity.  As this is a system dll that many other programs might install, it is installed into the Windows\System directory (Windows\System32 on NT).  This file will fail to install under the following conditions:
  • The RoboEx32.dll is already in use.
  • The RoboEx32.dll is corrupted or missing on the installer
  • A file lock is maintained on the dll
  • System priviledges prevent access
• FIX -- Reboot  the computer, and if logging onto NT, log on with administrator priviledge.  This should remove any file locks.  Run the installation program.  If this still fails, download the RoboEx32.dll  (zipped as RoboEx32.zip) from ftp://ftp.rainman-soft.com  in the pub directory.  Expand this file into the Windows\System directory or, if using NT, the Windows\System32 directory.

If you are still experiencing difficulties..

• If you are experiencing problems that aren't described above, chances are they have already been solved in the latest release.  If you have installed the latest release and the problems persist, please send a copy of the NGCView\User\Status.txt file in your email.  This will help us to locate the exact cause of the problem.
